Transit Safety

On Thursday, July 19, 2018, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) completed its congressionally-mandated effort to develop a Public Transportation Safety Program, releasing two final regulations – the Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) and the Safety Certification Training Program. State DOT Transit Offices are very interested in the PTASP final rule, which outlines requirements to incorporate FTA’s Safety Management System (SMS) policies and procedures in the creation of safety plans by transit agencies and providers (sub-recipients).

Transit Safety is a top priority. Thankfully, small urban and rural transportation systems are among the safest transit systems in the nation. With the release of the two final regulations and FTA’s completion of its safety program, transit safety is expected to remain a prominent issue among state DOT transit offices. On this website, AASHTO’s Multi-State Transit Technical Assistance Program will maintain important documents, letters and other vital information to the discussion over transit safety.
